Pitch Fibre Pipe Repairs

A Pitch Fibre pipe reformed with a resin liner following delamination

A Pitch Fibre pipe reformed with a resin liner following delamination

1. what is special about underground pipes made from pitch-fibre?Underground pipes made from pitch-fibre were often used in the 1950s and 1960s, but they are now often said to be inherently defective. They frequently have a much shorter life than pipes made from clay or heavy-duty plastic, and they tend to distort and/or collapse.

A Review of Existing Private Sewers and Drains in England and Wales published in July 2003 by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said:

The pipes [made from pitch-fibre] were relatively inexpensive and easy to handle and install. However, it became apparent that these pipes were susceptible to the delamination of their inner surface, ruining the integrity of the pipes. It was also discovered that, under normal conditions, they were susceptible to collapse under applied loading sooner than pipes made of more rigid materials.

2. how does this affect insurance claims?

Most household buildings-insurance policies cover accidental damage that has occurred to underground water and drainage pipes that serve the insured buildings, provided the pipes are the policyholder’s responsibility. But such policies often contain a number of exclusions – either generally or specifically in respect of accidental damage – including wear and tear, gradual deterioration (or gradually operating causes) and faulty workmanship or design.

Some insurers may refuse to pay claims where it turns out that the underground pipes were made from pitch-fibre. They may say that damage to pipes made from pitch-fibre is not covered under the policy – because it does not fall within the definition of accidental damage, or alternatively because it is excluded as the damage was caused by wear and tear or gradual deterioration or another reason covered by an exclusion in the policy.

But the policyholder may only have realised that the underground pipes are made from pitch fibre when there is a blockage or some other problem and the pipes are inspected.

Pitch Fibre pipes are a common problem across the South East of England.

Lancing Beach Drainage Installation

Blockbusters have undertaken extensive works on Lancing Beach, Sussex.  We are currently digging and laying new pipework right onto the beach to make a connection for a new Chinese Restuarant that will be opening later in the year.  This new building structure has remained undeveloped for some time.

This installation has been an interesting project, partly due to the unusual location of the building situated right on the beach, but also due to what we were going to find in the earth between the beach and the main sewer found on the coast road.

Whilst planning the project we discovered that there where numerous large concrete blocks that had been placed into the ground just up from the beach.  These blocks had been positioned as part of the World War 2 sea defence plan to prevent tanks & other armoured vehicles getting access to the coastal road.

The works have been moving slightly ahead of schedule due to the hardwork from all our staff  on site and from good planning by our project management team.

We look forward to completing the works on time so that the building can continue its development and be open in time for the Summer Season.

We have had a number of teams on site to enable the works to be completed quickly and efficiently.

This is just one of the many large scale projects we are in currently working on.

Portsmouth City Council

We have recently completed an extensive CCTV camera survey project for Portsmouth City Council.  Covering a large area around Portsmouth’s historic  naval dockyard, our CCTV engineers have conducted over 80 road gully surveys.  The aim has been to tag, trace and establish the flow and direction of these drains to enable planning for future development  of the area.

Back at our offices, Kevin & Dan have been reviewing each camera survey to log and report on the findings.  This has been a comprehensive and interesting project and we thank Portsmouth City Council for approaching Blockbusters to undertake these works.

Selling Your Home?

Don’t wait for your purchase to find problems with your drainage system.

Most purchasers now carry out a Closed Circuit Television Survey of the drains for any house purchase.

Although you may not have suffered any blockages or apparent drainage problems in the past this does not mean that the drain is of a standard required for mortgage lenders.

In the event that problems are discovered, in a lot of circumstances these problems can be rectified via our Claims Management Service, which can avoid costly depreciation of your sale price and delays with the sale

To arrange your pre-sale survey or for any further information please call us on 0800 0689282.
