What is a Saniflo Toilet?
Saniflo toilets are a modern toilet system that can be installed anywhere in the home without needing a mains drainpipe. The system works using upflush technology powered by electricity. A macerating blade pulverises solid waste which is then pumped to a septic tank or the main sewer pipe before the Saniflo then replenishes its water supply.
What Are the Benefits of a Saniflo Toilet?
There are many benefits to installing a Saniflo macerating toilet in your home:
- Easy placement: Your Saniflo toilet can be installed anywhere in the home without extensive plumbing works needing to be undertaken. An attic, a basement, a bedroom: a Saniflo can go anywhere.
- Quicker to install: Even if you get a professional installation, the labour costs will still be far less than with a traditional toilet installation. The fewer materials needed to be combined with the simpler assembly process means your new toilet can be ready in just a few hours.
- Movable: A Saniflo is easy to move to a different room when your needs change. If you need a toilet system for a temporary project, a Saniflo toilet is the perfect solution.
- Lower cost: Because of the reduced labour and lack of need for excavations, a Saniflo toilet installation will cost less than a typical toilet installation.
How to Install a Saniflo Macerating Toilet Yourself
As drainage and plumbing professionals, we generally wouldnât recommend installing a Saniflo toilet yourself. When installation isnât carried out properly, there are a number of Saniflo problems and issues that will likely result.
If you are looking at doing it yourself, weâve provided this guide.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Saniflo Toilet Installation
Equipment needed for your Saniflo installation:
- Your Saniflo upflush toilet unit
- A discharge pipe for waste piping – make sure this matches your systemâs dimensions
- An extension pipe if you want to hide the macerating system
- A GFCI: a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
- Access to a water supply
- Access to a source of electricity
- Access to a source of venting
The steps:
- Select an installation site.
- Connect the discharge pipe: you can do this by cutting into the soil stack of your home and using a Y-connector to connect the discharge pipes from the Saniflo macerator. Itâs very important to have a discharge pipe with as few bends as possible to help prevent clogs and allow waste to move more freely.
- Connect the toilet tank to your cold water supply to allow for the flushing mechanism. This is a fairly simple process of adding an adaptor to the waterline, screwing in a tap, and connecting it.
- Connect the pump to your power supply. Locate the nearest electrical circuit and plug in your GFCI. This tool will help to protect against power surges and keep the Saniflo system working.
- Connect the macerator pump to the vent system in your home. This can be done anywhere and all you need to ensure is that air is able to move in and out. Check your local Building Regulations to see if your vent system is up to scratch.
How Much Does it Cost to Install a Saniflo Toilet?
On average, a Saniflo toilet will cost between ÂŁ200 and ÂŁ500 for the unit itself. Saniflo installation cost can vary depending on the model you have and how large it is. A lot of the equipment you will need will be supplied with your Saniflo installation kit and anything else can be easily sourced from standard DIY shops for a cost that isnât extortionate.
What you should consider, however, is how much a Saniflo toilet can cost you in the long run. One of the most common problems we see with Saniflo toilets is that installation has been done incorrectly, leading to all sorts of problems including:
- Blockages in the pump
- Blockages in the waste outlet pipe
- Microswitch misfiring
- Leaks and foaming
Not only can these problems be costly to fix, they can also be hard to deal with yourself due to the human waste element. With any kind of plumbing installation job or work that includes plumbing systems, therefore, we always recommend getting a professional in to do the job properly so you can rest assured you have a system you can rely on.
