How to Unblock a Saniflo Toilet and Other Common Problems Explained

How to Unblock a Saniflo Toilet

Saniflo systems enable you to install a toilet in almost any room of a building where there is access to a waste disposal pipe. The intuitive design of the Saniflo means that the built-in macerator grinds up solid waste into smaller particles that flow through your waste pipes with ease.

Because of the complicated design of the Saniflo, if you develop a blockage or clog within the system, you cannot simply use a plunger to remedy the issue at hand. If you attempt to use a plunger to unblock a macerator, it could mean that you damage the macerator; which will require the Saniflo to be prepared by a specialist.

So, what is the best way to unblock a Saniflo toilet? You’ll need to take the system apart to manually clean it in order to prevent any damage from occurring to the system. This guide explains how to unblock a Saniflo system, as well as solutions to some other common problems that may arise in your time using your Saniflo.

How Do I Unblock a Saniflo Toilet?

Just like any other toilet, Saniflo toilets can become blocked if inappropriate items are flushed into them. Items like period pads, too much toilet paper, and foodstuffs can clog the pipe, and cause the toilet to block completely. Here’s the best way of unblocking a Saniflo toilet.

  1. Make sure you’re wearing protective rubber gloves and a mask while also protecting any other parts of your body in order to prevent contact with solid human waste.
  2. Disconnect the power supply to the Saniflo.
  3. To stop the water flow, turn the lever near the back of the toilet tank.
  4. Remove as much water from the toilet as possible.
  5. Place a bucket underneath the pipe running from the top of the Saniflo system.
  6. Use a wrench to loosen the pipes and allow any residual water to flow into the bucket.
  7. After draining completely, remove the pipes and clear any blockages that have formed inside using warm water or a plumbing snake.
  8. Unscrew the screws at the base of the Saniflo system and pinch the two ends of the metal clip on the connector between the Saniflo and the toilet to loosen it.
  9. Pull the Saniflo free from the back of the toilet. If any remaining water spills out, mop it up as needed.
  10. If there are any blockages in the connector located at the back of the toilet, flush it with warm water.
  11. If there are blockages located in the hole in the Saniflo unit where waste enters the macerator, flush it with warm water.
  12. From here, there should be no other blockages. Reassemble the Saniflo unit and pipes, turn the water flow back on and return power to the Saniflo system. Make sure to wait until the toilet tank refills with water before attempting to flush.

Please note that disassembling your Saniflo system will void your warranty. If your unit is still under warranty and you are concerned about undertaking this procedure yourself, please get in touch with one of the Saniflo experts at Blockbusters. Contact us today.

How to Unblock a Saniflo Toilet – The Microswitch

One of the most common issues with Saniflo products is a misfiring microswitch. This issue is caused when waste becomes lodged between the switch and the tank floor. This will cause the switch to think the tank is full and needs to be flushed.

To solve this issue, you will need to clear the tank by hand and manually restart the pump.

How to Fix a Damaged Saniflo Rubber Membrane

One further issue with micro switches is that the rubber membrane, which is the thin piece of rubber that water presses against to switch on the pump, can become damaged. If this membrane gets damaged or loses its seal, wastewater can enter the switch and cause a fault.

If this occurs while the pump is still within the warranty period, you will be able to obtain a replacement system. If not, you’ll need to get in touch with one of the certified Saniflo engineers at Blockbusters.

How to Unblock a Saniflo Toilet – The Shower Basin

If your Saniflo keeps becoming blocked, and even backs up onto the shower basin, it is likely that either the internal unit or waste pipe is suffering from a blockage. Blockages within the waste pipe can be caused due to an incorrectly installed outlet pipe.

To determine if your waste pipe has been installed incorrectly, the waste pipe will be at a 90-degree angle when leaving the pump. A correct installation of the pipe will leave the pump at 45 degrees. This will ensure that waste is thoroughly cleared from the pump and cannot flow back into the tank.

This is one of the most common problems related to Saniflo, so please follow the instructions for installation carefully or get in touch with Blockbusters to help.
